Islamist Morsi Victor in Egypt, the Army retains Power – Obama and Iran in usual agreement and “I told you So’s”

Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood is the new President elect of Egypt. Just hours before the announcement was made on Sunday, The Lighthouse reported the following: The question is what is happening behind closed doors, and if the Generals will really give up the country to the Brotherhood? What seems to be taking place is that the army will declare them victorious, as long as they accept that they lead the government in name only. It will be a weak presidential office, and rubber stamp parliament (if it ever is allowed to convene) and real power will remain with the military. That appears to be exactly what happened. Morsi and the Islamists accepted the reduced powers of the office and Constitutional amendments in return for the military council declaring him the winner albeit by a very small margin. The constitutional amendments effectively reduce the President to that of a Governor of a province or state. The army retains full independence in action, appointments of Generals and of the Minister of Defense (currently the real boss in Egypt, the formidable Gen. Tantawi). The President cannot declare war nor peace, and cannot even deploy troops internally without the Military’s consent. Egypt Showdown – “Arab Spring” Update

We are told that in mere moments, we will hear the announcements of the heavily contested elections in Egypt. The two leading candidates are Ahmed Shafiq (Mubarak’s last Prime Minister) the Muslim Brotherhood’s er Mohammed Morsi. Neither are really the “cream of the crop” in terms of their respective camps, but the election process turned out this way as each side tried to not scare the other too much. Morsi was relatively unknown among the Islamists, and this is precisely why he was chosen as a candidate for the previously banned Muslim Brotherhood (mother of Egyptian Jihad and Hamas). Other candidates it was feared, would inspire too much fear by the middle class and more secular sections of Egyptian society. Likewise, Omar Suleiman, a master diplomat and long time feared intelligence chief under Mubarak who not only survived the revolution, avoided prosecution but also became very popular as a critic of the Muslim Brotherhood post Mubarak, had earlier announced his candidacy. Suleiman was quickly barred from running. He was considered too close politically to Hosni Mubarak, as his Vice President and spy chief. The Lighthouse was Right, Yahoo offers Correction – And the Setup

Vindicating our earlier post: Yahoo headlines likely wrong: This new headline on Yahoo News via Reuters report that the man arrested that was being reported yesterday as El Chapo’s son was in fact previously unknown car dealer. Mexico got wrong man in high-profile drug arrest: lawyer Yahoo and other major news outlets corrected their story about one day after the likely confusion was reported here. Ironically, Yahoo news and Reuters are still not reporting that it IS in fact the wrong man (note the above headline is attributed to the suspect’s lawyer) though they had no problem reporting that it WAS Guzman without qualifications when first reporting he had been arrested. The Mexican government is however way ahead of the mainstream news media (who is trying to protect Obama from another embarrassing story) and already admitted that they have the wrong man. A more truthful version of the Reuters story would state that the suspect’s lawyer AND the Mexican government now agree it is a case of mistaken identity. Instead, they are going on reporting falsely that the Mexican government is still hoping to prove the identity by DNA tests. It is utter desperation from the leftist media hoping [...]

Yahoo Headlines Reporting “El Chapo” Guzman’s son has been Captured.. Apparently not true

Reuters, and the major media outlets, including a Yahoo headline today, are reporting the arrest by Mexican Marines of Mexico catches son of top drug lord “Shorty” Jesus Alfredo Guzman, “El Gordo”. This would be a major victory for Mexico’s embattled President weeks before the election. The operation was hailed as great success of joint US/Mexico cooperation and intelligence sharing. In fact, it seems it may have been a politically timed and hastily launched operation by two embattled administrations before election time. I am increasingly doubting that the man paraded for Mexican media was in fact Guzman’s son. There is little resemblance between him and known photographs. The circumstances of his capture are also unlikely. If in fact, they have the wrong man, this will surely lead to finger pointing (Mexico blaming bad DEA info and vice versa) and a big embarrassment for the two administrations that needed just the opposite. The Obama administration, already under fire for “Fast and the Furious” type operations in Mexico will have to answer for another bungled job in handling the drug war. This is still not conclusive, and hopefully time will tell, (if there is not a successful cover-up) if they did catch him or not. News of the son’s arrest would undoubtedly have set the [...]

Politics has Hijacked Justice

Though I had been hoping to avoid this already over-covered subject, the endless stream of headlines on this single incident that stink of a political hijacking of due process and the American Justice system is too much to ignore. I have to say, that though of course I am sorry that Trayvon is dead as I am sure everyone is including George Zimmerman, I am not particularly fond of either of the protagonists. So why write about this? To be frank, it is not that the incident itself which is very newsworthy, not outside local news coverage anyways, nor that I find either of the characters interesting nor extraordinarily good, bad, brave nor cowardly. Unfortunately, murders happen in the US daily, and they happen in Florida daily. There are approximately 45 murders each day in the United States, and as shocking as that may sound, that is after steadily declining violent crime rates in the US since the early mid 1990s. New reports showed that 2010 was the safest year (in regards to violent crime) in forty years! In any event, 45 people are still murdered (not shot in arguably self defense) each day in the US. There has therefore been hundreds of new homicide victims in America since [...]
